Texas Competitive Power Advocates

Texas Competitive Power Advocates (TCPA) is a trade association representing more than a dozen power generators, wholesale power marketers and retail electric providers with business in the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) wholesale and retail electricity markets

TCPA’s mission is to support and promote competitive wholesale and retail markets that ensure abundant, reliable and affordable electricity is available to Texas consumers.

As part of that mission, TCPA strongly supports the Public Utility Commission’s effort to enhance the efficiency and reliability of the ERCOT market through a proposed transition to a nodal market design. This superior market design, which has been embraced by nearly all other electricity markets in the United States, will bring important benefits to Texans, including:

  • Lower electricity bills for most customers across the state
  • Reduced pollution and better use of natural resources
  • Improved planning to ensure long-term electric reliability for the state’s rapidly growing population

The current electricity system for ERCOT, which serves the vast majority of Texans, has design flaws, which – unless corrected – will continue to rely on artificial subsidies that benefit a few companies and maintain artificially high electricity prices for millions of Texans. Continuing with the current market design also perpetuates inefficiency by unnecessarily relying on power generated by inefficient, polluting power plants and masking transmission bottlenecks that can cause reliability problems.
