ERCOT
The Electric Reliability Council of Texas, Inc. (ERCOT) is the organization that administers the state's power grid. As one of ten regional reliability councils in North America, ERCOT is responsible for keeping the lights on in Texas. With one of the largest control areas in the United States, the organization serves seven million customers and oversees the operation of more than 78,000 megawatts of generation and 38,000 miles of transmission lines in the State of Texas. ERCOT serves approximately 85 percent of the state's electric load and 75 percent of the geographic land area in Texas.
Since Texas restructured its $20 billion electricity industry in 2002 and gave most Texas electricity customers the power to choose their retail electricity provider, ERCOT has overseen the transactions resulting from restructuring, while maintaining the overall reliability of the electric grid.
The primary regulatory authority for ERCOT is the Public Utility Commission of Texas.
ERCOT's members include retail consumers, investor and municipally owned electric utilities, rural electric co-ops, river authorities, independent generators, power marketers, and retail electric providers.
All TCPA members are active participants in ERCOT, with positions on ERCOT’s board of directors and key committees.
